Bennett proudly hosts Anglo-Australasian Lawyers Society’s November Black Label Series

On 6 November 2024, we proudly hosted the Anglo-Australasian Lawyers Society (AALS) for an insightful Black Label series seminar, The Limits of Open Justice in Commercial Litigation: A Reply to Justice Lee, delivered by Bennett Consultant, Dr. Michael Douglas.

The evening examined the complexities of open justice in commercial litigation, inspired by Justice Lee’s recent comments on the increased use of broad suppression and non-publication orders in corporate Australia.

Michael provided an in-depth look at the balance between open justice — a cornerstone of common law — and legislative constraints that can limit public access, challenging some interpretations of Justice Lee’s stance in the media.

Special thanks to former AALS President Alex Hickman for his official welcome, Anthony Aristei for delivering the formal closing remarks as well, and to Fresh Convenience for the evening’s catering.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this thought-provoking discussion on the evolving role of open justice in the Federal Court.
