While the COVID-19 era has slowed down many industries, the commercial drone industry has embraced the challenge. Increasingly visible public utility applications of drones, including the contactless delivery of goods and medicines in Australia and elsewhere, indicate that the industry will come out of this period stronger than ever.
However, further challenges are on the horizon as the sector experiences exponential growth: primarily, how to unlock the full potential of commercial drones to undertake applications for social benefit, while still ensuring that public safety, privacy and civil liberties are undisturbed
This year’s RPAS in Australian Skies Conference, hosted by the Australian Association for Unmanned Systems (AAUS), presented an opportunity to reflect on the past, the present and the exciting future of commercial drones in Australia.
This paper explores the themes and issues arising from the conference.
